Thiruvananthapuram : To protest Modi government's attempt to undermine rule of law, secularism and the country’s democracy, CPI(M) Secretariat called for protest meets at local centres on Gandhi Jayanti, the 2nd of October, between 5 - 6 pm across the state. Covid protocols will be strictly adhered to at all sites.
The protest centers on CBI Court’s recent verdict in the Babri Masjid case that poses a direct challenge to rule of law, by acquitting all persons involved in the incident. The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court affirmed that Babri Masjid demolition amounted to unlawful act - a ruling that CBI Court in Lucknow now openly thrashed via its verdict.
It is also a matter of grave concern that the CBI was unable to table evidence in the case - a proof that politically-motivated abuse of national agencies has now broken all limits. This verdict has literally destroyed rule of law and the country’s judicial system. The current government has also reduced the parliament - another pillar of democracy - to the status of a mere spectator. The agricultural laws were rammed through the House without subjecting them to basic parliamentary procedures. Inside the parliament, the government went about suppressing opposition to the Bills - a right granted by the country’s constitution. And those protesting outside are being locked up in jail on the back of anti-national charges mounted on them.
All believers of democracy must unite against Modi government’s ongoing attempts to transform India into a religion-oriented authoritarian state. It is alarming to see how several political parties are yielding to centre's scaremongering tactics. CPI(M) urges all supporters of democracy and secularism to participate in the protest meets slated on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who had laid his life for the country's secularism.
