ഫ്രൈ ചെയ്യാൻ വലിയ മീൻ വേറെയുള്ളപ്പോൾ...പ്രഭാവര്‍മ്മയുടെ പംക്തി തുടരുന്നു

വെളളമെല്ലാം ഒഴുകിപ്പോയ ശേഷം ചിറ കെട്ടിയിട്ടെന്തു കാര്യം എന്ന ഒരു ചോദ്യമുണ്ടല്ലോ? ദമയന്തി നളനെ വരിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. കഥയറിയാതെ. തങ്ങളിലാരെയെങ്കിലും ദമയന്തി വരിക്കും എന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയിൽ അവരുടെ സ്വയംവരത്തിന് അണിഞ്ഞൊരുങ്ങി ഭൂമിയിലേക്കിറങ്ങിയ ദേവന്‍മാരോട് സ്വയം വരം കഴിഞ്ഞു തിരിച്ചു പോകുകയായിരുന്ന ഇന്ദ്രന്‍ ചോദിക്കുന്ന ചോദ്യമാണിത്. പാഥസാം നിചയം വാര്‍ന്നൊഴിഞ്ഞളവു സേതുബന്ധനോദ്യോഗമെന്തെടോ?
 

ഇത് മറ്റൊരു രൂപത്തില്‍ പറയലാണ് 'a stitch in time saves nine'. എന്തും ആവശ്യമായ സമയത്തു ചെയ്യണം. പിന്നീട് ചെയ്തിട്ടു കാര്യമില്ല. സംഭവിക്കുവാനുളളതു സംഭവിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഇനി അതേക്കുറിച്ചോര്‍ത്ത് വിഷമിച്ചെട്ടെന്തു കാര്യം? 'Don't cry over spilt milk.'
 

എന്തും വേണ്ട സമയത്തു ചെയ്താല്‍ മാത്രം പോര, വേണ്ട പോലെ ചെയ്യണം. 'Cut the mustard' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഒരു കാര്യം വേണ്ടപോലെ ചെയ്യുക എന്നാണ്. I have not yet understood the problem in its totality. Yet if I am given a chance, I will not be averse to cut the mustard.
 

'Eat humble pie' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ പരാജയം സമ്മതിക്കലാണ്. Inspite of the optimism expressed during the campaign, the UDF had to eat humble pie on the counting day.
 

'From soup to nuts' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ A to Z എന്നാണര്‍ത്ഥം. തുടക്കം മുതല്‍ ഒടുക്കം വരെയുളളതെല്ലാം. You can buy everything from the mall, from soup to nuts!
 

ആഹാരം കഴിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന വേളയിലായാല്‍പ്പോലും നിങ്ങള്‍ നിങ്ങളുടെ ബോസിനോട് 'I have a lot on my plate' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍, പ്ലേറ്റ് നിറയെ ആഹാരം എടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നല്ല, മറിച്ച് ചെയ്യാവുന്നതിലേറെ ജോലി ഭാരം എന്റെ തലയില്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെയുണ്ട് എന്നാണ്.
 

' I have bigger fish to fry' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാലോ ? എനിക്കു ചെയ്യാന്‍ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വേറെയുണ്ടെന്നാണര്‍ത്ഥം. The work assigned to me is not worth. I have got bigger fish to fry!
 

'Have egg on face' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഏതിലെങ്കിലും പരാജയപ്പെട്ട് വിളറി വെളുത്തു പോകലാണ്. The magician really had egg on his face, when he failed to read the letters hidden in the pocket of one of the viewers!

'Have one's cake and eat it too' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാലോ? ഉത്തരത്തിലിരിക്കുന്നതു എടുക്കുകയും വേണം, കക്ഷത്തിലിരിക്കുന്നതു പോകയുമരുത് എന്ന് പറയില്ലേ, അതു തന്നെ. You want to be a minister , Yet, you are unwilling to resign as a diplomat. ഇത്തരമൊരു സന്ദര്‍ഭത്തില്‍ നിങ്ങളുടെ നിലപാടിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ഇങ്ങനെ പറയാം, 'you want to have your cake and eat it too !'
 

സദ്യ കുശാലായി എന്ന് മലയാളത്തില്‍ പറയുന്നത് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലറിയിക്കണമെങ്കില്‍ 'the feast really hit the spot' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ മതി.
 

'Hot potato' എന്നു പറയുന്നത് പ്രത്യാഘാതമുളവാക്കാന്‍ പോരുന്ന വിവാദ വിഷയത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തിലാണ്. In the election of 80's discussion on Mandal Commission report was a hot potato! അതേ സമയം 'small potatoes' എന്നു പറയുന്നത് അപ്രധാന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന അര്‍ത്ഥത്തിലാണ്. We are discussing serious matters. We can't go after small potatoes!
 

'I am in a mess' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ ആകെ കുഴപ്പത്തിലായി എന്നാണല്ലോ അര്‍ത്ഥം. അത്തരം ഒരു കുഴപ്പത്തില്‍പ്പെടുകയും, അതില്‍ നിന്ന് കരകയറാന്‍ ആരുടെയെങ്കിലും സഹായം കൂടിയേ തീരൂ എന്നു വരുകയും ചെയ്താലോ? എങ്കില്‍ I am in a mess എന്നല്ല, പകരം, 'I am in a pickle' എന്നാണ് പറയേണ്ടത്! ആരും അച്ചാറില്‍ വീഴാതിരിക്കട്ടെ !
 

'Like two peas in a pod' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ നല്ല സാമ്യമുണ്ട് എന്നാണര്‍ത്ഥം. Urvashi and Kalpana have a strong resemblence. Both are like two peas in a pod.
 

'Low-hanging fruit' എന്നാല്‍ ഒരു കാര്യത്തിലെ എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ ചെയ്യാനാവുന്ന ഭാഗം എന്നാണ് അര്‍ത്ഥം. In the question paper, Part A, consisting of objective type questions was a low hanging fruit. But, Part B, was problematic. Part A was 'a piece of cake for me' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാലും ഇതേ അര്‍ത്ഥം കിട്ടും.
 

'Not mince words' എന്നൊരു പ്രയോഗമുണ്ട്. The head master did not mince his words. He blasted me black and white. I was terribly shocked ! മനസ്സിലുളള രൂക്ഷത കുറയ്ക്കാതെ വാക്കില്‍ പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കലാണ് 'not mince words'!

'Nutty as a fruit cake' എന്നാല്‍, crazy ആവലാണ്. കളിഭ്രാന്തുകയറിയ കുട്ടികളെക്കുറിച്ച് ഇങ്ങനെ പറയാം: These children are nutty as fruit cake !
 

'Pie in the sky' എന്നു പറയുന്നത് നടക്കാത്ത കാര്യത്തിനാണ്. He is too ambitious. He wants to be a minister of the State cabinet. But, frankly speaking, his ambition is just a pie in the sky.
 

'Piping hot' എന്നു പറയുന്നത് നല്ല ചൂടോടെ വിളമ്പുന്നതിനെയാണ്. Dosas served piping hot are very tasty !
 

'Rub salt on the wound' ഇപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ കഷ്ടത്തിലായ സ്ഥിതിയെ കൂടുതല്‍ വഷളാക്കലാണിത്. ഒരു തരം എരിതീയിൽ എണ്ണയൊഴിക്കൽ. Adding fuel to fire! He left the party. It was shocking. His joining the rival party in a couple of days rubbed salt on the wound.
 

'Read the tea leaves' എന്നത് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ലഭ്യമായ ചെറു സൂചനകള്‍ വെച്ച് ഭാവിയില്‍ ഉണ്ടാകാന്‍ പോകുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചു പറയലാണ്. The project estimate offers a rosy picture. But if you read the tea leaves, that are there between the lines, we can conclude that the future is grim. Pablo Neruda, the poet Iaurate could read the tea leaves and predict that Adolf Hitler would become a cruel autocrat, while talking to Herts, the envoy of Germany to Sri Lanka.
 

'Red meat' എന്നു പറയുന്നത് അണികളെ കോരിത്തരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി നടത്തുന്ന പ്രഖ്യാപനങ്ങളാണ്. The landlords pary threw red meat to the base, by announcing that they would do away with land reform lock, stock and barrel!

 

'Lock, stock and barrel' എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ സമ്പൂര്‍ണ്ണയായി എന്നര്‍ത്ഥം. തോക്കിന്റെ സുപ്രധാനമായ മൂന്നു ഭാഗങ്ങളാണവ. മൂന്നും ചേര്‍ന്നാല്‍ തോക്കായി.
 

'Sell like hot cakes' എന്നത് പൊതുവെ ഏവര്‍ക്കുമറിയുന്നതാണ്. ചങ്ങമ്പുഴയുടെ രമണന്‍ ചൂടപ്പം പോലെയാണല്ലൊ വിറ്റഴിഞ്ഞത്, sold like hot cakes.! hot dogs ചുട്ട പട്ടിയല്ല; ഒരു തരം ബൺ സാൻവിച്ചാണ് . ബണ്ണിനുളളിൽ പിളർപ്പുണ്ടാക്കി അവിടെ സോസേജ് വെച്ച് ആവിയിൽ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന പലഹാരം !
 

'Simmer down' എന്നു പറയുന്നത്, 'ചൂടാവാതെ, അല്‍പ്പം ഒന്നു തണുക്ക്' എന്നു പറയില്ലേ. അതിനു സമാനമാണ്. Simmer down! Or else your BP would shoot up.
 

'Slower than molasses' എന്നാലര്‍ത്ഥം അതീവ മന്ദഗതിയില്‍ എന്നാണ്. The students only bus, by which they used to go to college was slower than molasses!

'At a snail pace' എന്നും പറയാം; ഒച്ചിഴയുന്നതുപോലെ.
