Phrasal Verbs Beginning with Letters ‘b’, ‘c’ and ‘g
 What is the difference between ‘bring about’ and ‘bring up’? These are phrasal verbs. Bring about means ‘cause something to happen’. Bring up means ‘rise children’. Examples: The arrival of electricity in rural areas brought about a huge change. She stopped working for a few years in order to bring up her children.
   What does ‘brush up on’ mean? It means refresh one’s knowledge. Example: Mary decided to brush up on her Spanish.  What is the difference between ‘break away from’ and ‘break down’? Break away from means ‘leave and become independent’ and break down means ‘lose control of one’s emotions’. Examples: He broke away from the organisation and set up his own company. The parents broke down when they heard the news.
    What is the difference between ‘call at’ and ‘call for’? Call at means ‘stop at a place briefly’ and call for means ‘demand that something be done’. Examples: The train calls at Mysore on the way to Bangalore. The opposition has called for an investigation into the misuse of public funds. What is the meaning of ‘call up on’? It means ‘formally request’? I now call up on the President to address the assembly. What does ‘carry out’ and ‘carry over’ mean? ‘Carry out’ means conduct and ‘carry over’ means postpone until later. Examples: Tests are carried out to determine the efficiency of a new drug. As regards holidays, can we carry over days from one year to the next?
   What is the meaning of ‘get away with’? It means to do something against the rules. Example: How could you get away with cheating on the test? What does ‘get on with mean’?  It means to have a good relationship with. She doesn’t get on with her mother- in- law. What is the meaning of ‘get over’? It means to overcome. My puppy died last month and I can’t get over it. What does ‘get together’ mean? It means to collect people in one place. We have to get together for our presentation today. What is the meaning of the phrasal verb get by? It means to manage to live. We don’t earn much money but we can get by.
